The Expense Report I Almost Rounded Up

The Expense Report I Almost Rounded Up RedeemedExistence daily devotional — September 21, 2026 I drove to a client site last month and forgot to check the odometer before I left, so when it came time to file the mileage I had to estimate. The honest number was somewhere close to sixty two miles round trip. I sat at my kitchen table and typed seventy five instead, told myself it accounted for the detour I took around construction, and hovered over the submit button for a full minute before my thumb finally moved. Nobody would have caught it. The company reimburses mileage at a rate that would not have covered a cup of coffee either way. It was such a small number that calling it a lie felt almost dramatic, and that is exactly what made it dangerous. I have spent years learning that temptation rarely wears a warning label. It came to me in active addiction dressed as relief, one more drink to take the edge off a day I had not earned. These days it shows up smaller and quieter, in...

The Email I Rewrote Eleven Times

I counted the drafts folder before I finally hit send last night. Eleven versions of the same four paragraphs to a client who was only asking me to confirm a delivery date, something I could have answered in one sentence at nine in the morning. Instead I rewrote the opening line four separate times, deleted an exclamation point and put it back twice, and read the whole thing out loud in an empty kitchen to make sure no sentence could possibly be misread as careless. I used to think this kind of obsessing was just thoroughness, the good kind of care a responsible man brings to his work. Some of it is. But if I am honest with myself, most of what kept me circling that email for three hours was not a desire to serve my client well. It was fear, dressed up in a collared shirt and calling itself diligence. Fear that one clumsy sentence would confirm what some part of me still believes ...

The Meeting Where My Name Never Came Up

The Meeting Where My Name Never Came Up I sat in a conference room on Tuesday and listened to a coworker walk the whole leadership team through an idea I had built from scratch over three weekends, the pricing model I had emailed him for feedback because he sits two levels above me and I thought that was how you got something noticed. He never said my name. He said "I've been thinking" and "what if we" as if the spreadsheet had simply occurred to him in the shower, and I sat there with my jaw tight, watching people nod at words that used to be mine, doing the math in my head on exactly how many ways I could correct the record without looking petty in front of the one person who signs my raises. I did not correct the record. I sat through the rest of that meeting composing arguments I never delivered, and I drove home rehearsing the confrontation I was going to have with him the next morning, each version angrier than the last. By the time I pulled into my ...
