The Nine Browser Tabs I Can't Close

The Nine Browser Tabs I Can't Close RedeemedExistence daily devotional — September 19, 2026 I have had the same nine tabs open on my laptop for nine days now. Two job listings, a cost of living calculator, an apartment search three states away, a map of the nearest recovery meetings in a city where I know no one, and spreadsheets where I have tried to make the decision add up on paper since I cannot make it add up in my head. The promotion is real and the money is good, and my wife keeps asking, gently, whether I am ever going to close those tabs one way or the other. I tell her I am still thinking. What I am actually doing is standing perfectly still while feeling like I am running a marathon, because somewhere around day six the thinking stopped producing anything and just started looping. I used to believe decision fatigue was a modern complaint, something soft, invented by people with too many choices. I do not believe that anymore. By the time a real decision reaches m...

The Microphone I Almost Handed Back at Tuesday Night Group

The leader of our Tuesday night meeting asked me last week if I would share my testimony at the anniversary dinner, the one where the newcomers bring their families and the coffee runs out by seven. I said yes before I thought about it, the way you say yes to something that sounds like an honor. Then I lay awake running through every reason it was a mistake. My story doesn't have a dramatic bottom, no jail cell, no ambulance. I don't have the vocabulary the men with seminary degrees have when they stand up front. I pictured myself at that microphone with nothing worth the room's attention, and I almost called the leader back to tell him to find someone more qualified to mean something up there. That word qualified is the one that kept circling. I have spent most of my sober life believing usefulness has to be earned by being impressive first, that God only hands the microphone to people who have already proven they can hold it well. Moses felt exactly what I felt, stand...

The Apology I Rehearsed in the Driveway

The Apology I Rehearsed in the Driveway RedeemedExistence daily devotional — September 18, 2026 I sat in my driveway last night with the engine off and the garage door still down, running through the same four sentences over and over, trying to find a version of "I'm sorry" that would not sound as hollow as I felt saying it. Twenty minutes earlier I had snapped at my son over something that did not deserve the volume I gave it, a missed trash night, a tone in his voice I decided to take as disrespect instead of the exhaustion it probably was. I watched his face fold in on itself before he walked to his room, and I knew immediately I had done something I would need to undo, but I sat in that driveway a long time before I made myself go undo it. That gap between knowing I was wrong and actually walking inside to say so is where guilt does its worst work. It is not the same feeling as the shame I used to carry from years of addiction, that older a...
